British Heavy Weights - Series II by Search Impex: Chappells of Stubbington - MB Actros 8x4
Established by Michael Chappell in 1959, the original business focussed on the buying and selling of trucks, plant and agricultural equipment. It also had a transport operation - but this was maintained simply as a means of moving the Company’s own stock. Chappell’s, however, was seen by others as being good at running its own transport service and so the business began to receive requests from other customers to move items of plant and equipment. Initially, this additional work was accommodated in and around running its own business, but by the mid 1980’s, such was the volume of this add-on transport work, that a formal decision was made to branch out into transporting equipment for clients.
Now with some four decades of experience in the transportation of large and abnormal loads, Chappell’s are recognised as experts in heavy haulage. Based in the South of England and conveniently situated between the ports of Southampton and Portsmouth, the Company undertakes heavy haulage work throughout the UK & Europe. Regular jobs include moving plant and equipment for the construction and demolition industries, including large excavators, crawler cranes, piling rigs and crushing and screening equipment. Heavy marine equipment, pontoons and work boats also feature in the workload yet, faithful to its roots, the Company also remains involved in the transportation of agricultural equipment.
Sadly, Michael Chappell passed away in 2008 but the Company continues as a family run business with a well established reputation in the heavy haulage market. The current range of trucks and equipment comprises 3, 4 & 5 axle step frames, extendable low loaders up to 150 tonnes gross, double extender flats, plant and beam deck low loaders as well as 6x4 tractor units (from 90-160 ton), the Mercedes Actros Titan Megaspace 8x4 (reported to be the first truck of this type to enter service in the UK). Abnormal load escort vehicles (fully equipped to highways authority specification) are also available.
Donnell & Ellis Scania 8x4 Based in Omagh, Co. Tyrone in Northern Ireland, the Company was established in 1990 and still remaining a family run concern, now benefits from almost 25 years’ experience in the heavy haulage market. Whilst offering a general road haulage service, the Company is best known for specialising in the movement of quarry equipment, large industrial plant and heavy machinery throughout Ireland, the UK and into continental Europe.
Always image conscious, Donnell & Ellis prides itself on the appearance and reliability of its vehicles, as well as on achieving high levels of customer satisfaction. The well presented fleet is predominantly Scania (from 6x2 units through to 8x4 units), used in conjunction with a wide range of specialist trailers from 3 & 4 axle extendable flats and 3 to 7 axle extendable stepframes, through to 3 to 8 axle low loaders and a range of semi modular equipment. The business also has its own abnormal load escort vehicles and can undertake all aspects of planning for moving long, high, wide or heavy loads by road & ferry. Allelys Heavy Haulage - DAF XF SSC 8x4
In 1959, Maurice Allely purchased his first truck, (a Thorneycroft Sturdey-Stars), to enable him to start a business transporting livestock throughout south Warwickshire. He cannot have imagined, however, that some 55 years on, his initial truck purchase and business venture would grow to become one of the UK’s largest haulage and transport companies in the form of The Allelys Group. Today’s Group now specialises in three main areas, namely General Haulage, Heavy Haulage and also Electrical/Industrial installations and removals.
Allelys Heavy Haulage Ltd., is one of the country's leading specialists in the movement of heavy and abnormal loads. Able to draw on more than 20 years of experience and with an impressive range of modern trucks & impressive trailer types at its disposal means Allelys is well placed to undertake all aspects of work associated with abnormal load movements . Working throughout the UK & Europe, regular loads (up to 350 tonnes) include transformers, generators & turbines, as well as marine vessels, railway locomotives & rolling stock – in this respect, the Company operates the largest fleet of purpose built, specialised rail carriers in the UK.
Loads are moved on a variety of trailers ranging from low loaders and extendable flatbeds, through to wafer beds, wind turbine tower & blade trailers, vessel carriers, not to mention girder trailers (to 400 tons), as well as modular trailers & self propelled modular trailers (capable of moving up to 1500 tons). Traction is provided by DAF & MAN units - from standard 6x2 tractors, through to ballasted 8x4 units, plated for up to 250 tons.
McIntosh Heavy Logistics - MAN TGX 8x4 McIntosh Plant Hire (Aberdeen) Ltd., is the North East of Scotland’s leading earthworks, plant / transport hire and heavy haulage company. Today’s business stemmed from a company owned and run by the current Managing Director’s father. Incorporated in 1976, the Company is a wholly owned and family run business, operating from a modern purpose built 62 acre site 10 miles west of Aberdeen. With a combined experience of more than 100 years in the industry, work undertaken ranges from straight forward topsoil supplies, through to major earthwork projects. The company has a wealth of experience in every aspect of earthmoving and general civil engineering groundworks and employs a 50 strong workforce. Projects undertaken include new housing and industrial developments, new construction and upgrade of existing road networks and the construction of golf courses (having completed five new Scottish courses to date).
The Company’s activities also extend to the heavy and abnormal haulage sector, courtesy of its subsidiary McIntosh Heavy Logistics (MHL) which, with a fleet of ten low loaders, operates throughout the UK. Loads of up to 150 tons, (STGO Cat 3), can be carried, but MHL also has the capacity to carry / move loads of up 240 tons gross, quayside. Whilst, as would be expected, MHL takes care of the in-house movement requirements for McIntosh Plant Hire (Aberdeen) Ltd’s earthmoving equipment, its core business is the transportation of equipment for many major companies within the oil industry. MHL provides a complete logistics package from quotation stage and route planning, through to all the necessary authority notifications and end of journey crane lifting requirements. Paul R
