Does anyone know of any other landfills or waste handling facilities that utilize large equipment like the RH120's that Fresh Kills operated?

Yes, although it is not as big as the Rh120's, but waste management in tullytown pa, around my area, own a large crawler crane (don't know who what make is) with a clam shell, that they operate at a sandpit. Now they use this crane to excavate sand, on a barge, and then the barge has a built in screener, it screens the sand, and unloads it at the shore, I believe they then truck the sand to their landfill, as fill material. They also have Manitowoc 4600 dragline to do also excavate sand, from the same water filled sand pit.

Here is some articles about the landfill in tullytown (morrissville)

Thats cool, I actually saw that one day when I was messing around on Bing Maps.

Hey Fresh Kills Park Team, Do you have any old photos of the landfill you could share? I saw the nice time line you guys made on your blog and think you guys did a great job with that.

Here is one from the active landfill days we've recently discovered:

We've made a number of posts to the Freshkills Park blog that reference the active landfilling days. A few of our favorites that might be of interest:

-the proposal issued by Robert Moses in 1951 for the end use of Fresh Kills

-an informational video about sanitary landfills that features footage of Fresh Kills, including the machinery in use

-the timeline that you mentioned, which was a catalog for an art exhibit about Fresh Kills back in 2001

We update our Flickr stream frequently with photos of how the site looks currently, so please check back every once in a while for new images of Freshkills Park.

We are also working on a Historical Google Map of Fresh Kills that will feature some images we've discovered of the site before landfilling - I'll be sure to link to it once it's finished. It is amazing how much the site has changed over the years. We'd like to have a comprehensive library featuring more images of the active days but don't have access to all that many that can't be found from a quick internet search. If you happen to find any please post them or send them to freshkillspark@parks.nyc.gov. We'd love to see them!

Thanks Josh, those are fantastic.

I forgot to mention that the black and white image I posted was from a New York Magazine article from 1969. I thought it was interesting because it's difficult to find photos from the early decades of the site.

The Kills Landfill is closed, I believe a majority of the equipment was sold.

How big was Fresh Kills? 3,000 acres. They had one of the largest equipment fleets in one place in the country. As far as Payhaulers, They had 52 of them, most modified to haul 90 cu yds of trash. With the hi volume bodies, they were 30 feet tall. They had at least seven of the RH 120's and many other big machines. I recall that at one time they had 60 or so D8H's hauling triple Athey side dump garbage trailers "tracked" from the fleet of garbage barges that unloaded 24-7 year round..... They had as many as 30 D9's back in the 70's for pushing, etc. Cranes with clams, draglines ,scrapers, and many other excavators and machines, etc, etc. The landfill was by far the largest in the world.

Anyone know if these are the old Fresh Kills cranes they used before they bought the RH120's? These cranes are located at a scrap yard off Linden Ave. E in Bayonne, the company also has a lot of the old barges they DSNY used and some of the water skimmers.

Not sure where exactly they came from, but those cranes currently belong to the Atlas Marine division of Sims Metal in Jersey City. I have been going there off and on for the last 14 years, and they have been there all the while, back when it was PSN and Hugo Neu Schnitzer East. Every know and then I have seen them out in the harbor loading ships off of barges with scrap metal.

I believe that Naporano/Metal Management used to have one as well. Metal Management is now part of Sims, too. Naporano had a bunch of ex NYC Sanitation Payhaulers in their Port Newark yard hauling scrap, most of the ones still there are lettered for sub contractor Lomma Construction.

the first crane appears to be an AMERICAN 12210, usually used as a dragline.
